Andry Romero
& the right to due process
The right to due process ensures that every person, regardless of citizenship, has access to fair and lawful proceedings. The Free Andry campaign exemplifies this principle.
Through the creation of the FreeAndry.org website, short-form videos, and translation services, this campaign raised awareness of Andry's unlawful detention in CECOT (a notorious Salvadoran prison designed to house terrorists) and mobilized public support for his release.

Andry was seeking asylum in the US by lawful means
and was wrongly imprisoned from March to July, 2025
Andry José Hernández Romero was seeking asylum in the U.S. after facing persecution for his political beliefs and sexual orientation in Venezuela.
Due to an agreement between the Trump administration and the government of El Salvador, he, along with over 200 other Venezuelan men, was transferred to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) despite having no criminal record.
His case highlights the human cost of denying due process and the urgent need for accountability in U.S. immigration enforcement.
Along with 251 others, Andry was reunited with his family in Venezuela after a deal was reached between the USA, El Salvador, and Venezuela.
July 18, 2025
Andry's release marked the end of the ordeal in CECOT, but he was sent back to the country from which he was fleeing in the first place. The United States remains accountable for the torture, starvation, and political exploitation these men suffered.
Continued advocacy post-repatriation
Following his release, Immigrant Defenders Law Center continues to represent Andry in his asylum case .
Their stories remain central to ongoing advocacy for accountability and human rights in U.S. immigration policy. In the weeks after his release, I supported ImmDef by providing live translation services for media interviews, including with The Bulwark podcast, The Advocate, and Congressman Mark Takano to help amplify Andry’s voice and ensure his story reached an international audience.
