Earth Holds Water / Water Shapes Earth explores the reciprocal relationship between Earth and Water through Nahua mythology and symbolism.
The front design depicts Coatlicue, Lady of the Serpent Skirt, holding Coyolxauhqui, Lady of the Moon, within a reservoir of hidden waters. In Mesoamerican thought, the Moon is associated with the nocturnal, the aquatic, and the generative forces concealed beneath the surface of the world. Like a seed beneath the earth, it disappears only to return again.
The back design turns the relationship in the opposite direction. If the Earth holds water within mountains, caves, springs, and roots, water in turn shapes the Earth. Rivers carve valleys, rain nourishes the soil, and hidden waters give form to the living world. Together, the two images express a principle of mutual creation: Earth contains Water, and Water transforms Earth.
