The Fifth Sun
A telling of the creation story from the central highlands of México.

The Fifth Sun
This three-part series retells the Nahua creation myth of the Fifth Sun. It follows the fading of the old fire, the sacrifices that gave rise to the sun and moon, and Tonatiuh’s daily journey across the sky. These stories talk about cosmic cycles, but also reflect a philosophy for how people face change, make sacrifices, and experience joy as we walk the path of life.

Part 1/3
The embrace of change
As Huehueteotl’s fire fades, he yields to the cycle of transformation. From his ashes rises a new fire, a reminder that every transition carries the potential for renewal.

Part 2/3
Self sacrifice
Nanahuatzin leaps into the flames without hesitation, becoming the sun. Tecciztécatl follows reluctantly and becomes the moon. Their story contrasts the strength of wholehearted action with the dim light of half-measures.

Part 3/3

The Wheel of Creation
With the first sunrise, the ancestral spirits set the wheel of creation into motion: birth, fulfillment of purpose, death, and renewal. Tonatiuh’s pilgrimage across the sky reflects our own journey in life; thrusted forward by both free will and the destiny.
